NOTE: Since HSLDA is unable to live-stream multiple workshops simultaneously, we have selected the two workshops below as best suited to the online streaming format. (The other onsite workshops incorporate too many off-camera audience activities to be practical for an online presentation.)
11:40–1:26:02 — General Session: Yes, You Can Homeschool Your Struggling Learner and We Can Help!
Faith Berens, Joyce Blankenship, and Krisa Winn, HSLDA Special Needs Consultants
In this introductory general session, you’ll meet today’s speakers—HSLDA’s Struggling Learner / Special Needs and Toddlers to Tweens consultants. You’ll also get a helpful quick overview of HSLDA’s Struggling Learner / Special Needs department and the many resources we provide to both members and non-members. Together, we will explore diagnostic checklists for struggling learners, identify common roadblocks homeschooling parents face, discuss tips for navigating challenges, and look at strategies for success for children who learn differently.
1:38:38–2:48:43 — General Session: Organized (Well, Almost!)—Time Management for Busy Moms
Vicki Bentley, HSLDA Toddlers to Tweens Consultant
As a busy mom, do you sometimes struggle with lesson planning, keeping the house somewhat presentable, teaching, keeping up with the laundry, and getting dinner on the table the same day you homeschool? Come hear practical tips and encouragement from a fellow homeschooling mom of many. Your husband and children will thank you, and you will have hope for another day of science and language arts!
2:55:59–3:52:40 — Workshop: Teaching Math to Struggling Learners
Krisa Winn, HSLDA Special Needs Consultant
Is your child having difficulty mastering basic math facts but ‘gets’ math concepts? Do you find your child able to master a concept one day, but completely forgets it the next day? Maybe your student is in a vicious “I’m not good at math cycle” and needs a way out. If so, this workshop is for you. In this session, you’ll become equipped with solid, easy-to-implement teaching strategies, ideas for providing accommodations in math, lists of supplemental math resources, and more.
4:54:44–6:04:12 —Workshop: Tackling Tricky High School Issues
Faith Berens, HSLDA Special Needs Consultant
Are you facing unique challenges while homeschooling a struggling or a typical learner in the high school years? Do you have questions such as, “How do I award my child with special needs a diploma?” or “What do I do if my child with dyslexia can’t read typical high school level material?”
In this workshop, you’ll discover solutions and resources—alternative course work, specialized curricula and learning materials, assistive technology, transcript options, possible graduation guidelines / high school programs for special learners, post-high school options, and tips for navigating the process of applying for testing accommodations for the college boards. You’ll also receive sample transcripts for students with special learning challenges. Whether or not you are currently homeschooling a high school student, this session can help you in thinking forward and planning ahead for the high school years!
6:09:58–End — General Session: When Life Broadsides Your Homeschool
You had a wonderful plan at the beginning of the school year for a well-rounded education, envisioning academic excellence and character development in your smiling, well-adjusted offspring. But then . . . life happened. How do you find “normal” again? In this workshop, Vicki helps you focus on the essentials when you’re on the frontlines, especially in a crisis situation. (There is some focus on specific life crises.)
